Nick in the 90's

Nickelodeon: The Golden Age
By Conor Levis

The other day some friends and I were reminiscing about childhood memories. It's always a blast talking about the good old days. Then we got on the subject of our old childhood shows, specifically Nickelodeon shows from the 90's. What a great time it was to be a kid in that era. We grew up with some of the greatest shows you could ever want at that age. Not only that but looking back now you find so many funny things you never realized before as you'll see throughout this blog. They need to create a station wih reruns of all these shows that we can all watch. There was The Adventures of Pete & Pete (theme song playing at the top) and Salute Your Shorts, the Rugrats and Doug, Double Dare and Legends of the Hidden Temple, Ren & Stimpy and Are You Afraid of the Dark. The list goes on and on. I remember every single one too... which kind of makes me wonder what else my childhood consisted of. I think my parents just put me in front of the TV all day because I really don't know how I could have watched so many shows. But hey, I'm not complaining. We also talked about the current state of our former favorite network and the shows of today. I feel bad for today's kids because they don't have the privilege of exposure to these shows. It's a new generation...and since the internet has taken off like it has in our culture, things are different for kids now. But that's a whole different story. All I know is their shows are lousy. So for you readers, I'd like to dedicate today's blog to all of the great shows we grew up with. A blast from the past. Enjoy!

Salute Your Shorts

Remember Donkey Lips? LOL. He raps now, I swear to god. My friend found his music page on myspace a few years ago. Unfortunately I think he deleted his music page but I did find his "official" myspace page and also another one with a couple of his rap songs on it. I can't even put into words how funny this is.

Hey Dude

This is all I could find for Hey Dude which sucks cause it had an awesome theme song. Oh well.

The Adventures of Pete and Pete

Definitely the most grown up show from that era. My friend and I watched episodes on DVD last summer and still found it really funny. Great show.

Clarissa Explains It All

I used to get wicked excited for this show because I believe it was the show that kicked off "SNICK" every Saturday night. Looking back now, how creepy was it that Clarissa's friend Sam used to randomly show up at Clarissa's window with a ladder? On a scale of 1 to 10...I'd say it's about this creepy.

Are You Afraid of the Dark?

Speaking of creepy...Are You Afraid of the Dark was probably my favorite show for that very reason. It was legitimately scary. There was an episode where a guy was buried alive. REALLY? A man was buried alive on a kid's network? That's the most terrifying thing ever. But awesome.

The Ren and Stimpy Show

I get so depressed when my friends tell me they weren't allowed to watch this show. I was so infatuated with Ren & Stimpy that my parents took me to a mall two hours away because they were there (which means two people dressed as mascots). Who could forget "magic nose goblins" and "Happy, Happy, Joy Joy"? This one really was strange.

Double Dare

It doesn't get much better than people getting slimed. Host Marc Summers...is there any doubt that this guy was a pedophile?

Nick Arcade

Easily the most unintentionally funny show intro. Watch the little dance that host Phil Moore does at 00:43 seconds. Phil Moore was such a crackhead. It was so blatantly obvious except for the fact I had no idea what crack was. Skip to 3:15 of this video, how can a guy get that excited about kids playing video games unless he's on drugs? This show was so fun to watch...even if only for the funny moments bad players like these gave us.

GUTS

I always found it funny that the woman's name was Moe. I also found it funny when players would lose every single competition, like Peach in the video above.

Legends of the Hidden Temple

Easily the coolest game show on Nick at the time. They show reruns on the Comcast channel Nick GAS. We need more of this.

Wild and Crazy Kids

This was a fun show. Who could forget host Omar Gooding? The black sheep of the Gooding family. We still loved him anyway. He went on to play the Running Back who did all the drugs in Playmakers. By the way, what the hell is Marc Summers doing in that video? I told you that guy was sketchy.

What Would You Do?

I always wanted to go to the pie wash because I thought it looked really tasty. All that frosting, yummy!

All That

What's not to love about this show? A great cast that produced one of the funniest duos of our time in Kenan Thompson & Kel Mitchell and also the lovely Amanda Bynes, TLC (my girls) doing the theme song, and it was just funny. Kenan now works on Saturday Night Live and Amanda Bynes turned out pretty hot, also doing movies. I'm not sure what happened to Kel. I remember there was a rumor for a while that he died. I really liked Kel. Remember Lori Beth Denberg? LOL. Oh, how I love it all.

Rugrats

Probably the biggest thing on Nickelodeon during that time. Everyone LOVED this show. I know that it was definitely my favorite for a long time. Too bad they ruined it with that movie, the birth of Tommy's brother, and Chuckie's sister. Why fix something that isn't broke? Then they came back with that Rugrats: All Grown Up. Listen, we don't want to see what Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, and Angelica are like when they're older. I want to remember them for what they were...little rugrats. And that's the way I'll always choose to remember them.

Doug

The Doug Intro

This seemed to be the second choice after Rugrats as far as popularity goes. Another show that everybody LOVED. With Doug Funny, Skeeter Valentine, Porkchop and Patti Mayonnaise..it was also one of those grown up cartoons that taught us lessons. I remember asking my dad once when I was little what his favorite Nick show was and he responded with "Doug". Looking back now, it makes perfect sense. Too bad they ruined this too by moving it to Disney. Tons of memorable characters in this one (Mr. Dink, hahahaha). The show that gave us Quailman and The Beets, "Killer Tofu" and "Banging on a Trash Can". Gotta love it all.

Rocko's Modern Life

EMBED-Rockos Modern Life Good Intro - Watch more free videos

For me it's a toss up between this and Hey Arnold as the funniest cartoon on Nick. It was funny because it was just so random and weird. And it created one of my favorite moments. Heffer, the cow that lived with a family of wolves. Philbert, the nerdy friend who married Dr. Hutchinson, a cat with a hook for a hand. Mr. and Mrs. Bighead, self explanatory. Lots of great characters.

Hey Arnold!

Hey Arnold -TV-Intro - MyVideo

As I mentioned before, maybe the funniest cartoon on Nick. The show that gave us Football Head and his friend, Gerald. Helga G. Pataki and her bookworm friend, Phoebe. Harold, the fat kid; Sid, the small shady character; Stinky, the tall and lanky hick; Eugene, the jinx and the rest of the gang. Also memorable characters like Stoop Kid, Dino Spimone and Mickey Kaline made Hey Arnold a definite classic.

Aaahh!!! Real Monsters

One looked like a candy cane, one looked like a gremlin, and one held him eyeballs. Oblina, Ickis, and KRUM hahaha. Who thought up this show?

KaBlam!

The thing I remember most about this show is the Action League Now! team that feature a naked guy, a scuba diver, and a huge blonde wonder woman type figure. But this show also had Prometheus and Bob and Sniz and Fondue who were equally awesome.

My Brother and Me

Another show that not a lot of my friends remember. It was about a family growing up in Charlotte, NC. Brothers Alfie and Dee Dee were the main characters...as well as Alfie's friend Goo and the random white kid that Dee Dee hung out with. Anyway, this show created some absolute classics like the "Hit Me!" scene and "Goooooo Punch".

Secret World of Alex Mack

I used to watch this show but I remember not being a huge fan. It came on before one of my favorite shows so I just sat through it. I remember thinking Alex Mack was hot though.

These are just some of my favorites that I remember well. I'm sure I'm missing a few good ones. There's a petition online http://www.petitiononline.com/90snick/petition.html that people are signing to try and get these shows back onto a network. I would watch reruns if they could get it on a channel. There's also a facebook group of over 300,000 people for the same cause. Anyway, hope you enjoyed looking back.

Hank Marducas

Today's Random Thought
by Conor Levis

Can we just make "Rihanna" (Rihannaed, Rihannaing) the official term for a guy beating the shit out of his girlfriend? It's hip, it's relevant, it's now. Plus it's recognizable and there really isn't a good term for that situation anyway. This is how it would be used it in a sentence:

Rick: "So how did things go last night with your girl?"

Conor
: "Ehhh, she was no good...so I rihannaed her and went home."

(That conversation is totally fabricated, I do not approve of disgusting acts such as rihannaing.)

Anyway, here are some videos that I like:

LOL I saw this on TV the other night

My favorite part of He Got Game. SPOILER ALERT! if you haven't seen this movie and you plan to. Denzel Washington plays a father who's son, Jesus Shuttlesworth (Ray Allen), is on the verge of becoming a basketball star. The father is jailed when Jesus is young after he accidently kills his wife. Even though it was an accident, Denzel's character gets a hefty sentence and Jesus can never forgive his father. Denzel is released from jail temporarily to try and persuade his son to commit to the local State University. In this scene at the end of the movie, Denzel challenges his son to a game of one on one to decide both of their fates. I read somewhere that for this scene Denzel and Ray Allen played a real game of one on one. If that's true, Denzel is pretty fucking good at ball. The dialogue at the end of this scene is really powerful...it gets me everytime.

Things I Find Funny
by Rick Welsch

These are things that I find absolutely hilarious.

Hot Bitch of the Day:

Rashida Jones

In all honesty I dont even call her Rashida, to me shell always be Karen Filippelli. She is super hot in The Office, and still incredibly hot in I Love You, Man. Next week she'll be in the new NBC show Parks and Recreation. Karen Fililppelli... I mean Rashida, you are the Hot Bitch of the Day!

We're Getting the Band Back Together!
by Conor Levis

We're getting the band back together. I'm talking about the Cantstandyas, the band that consists of myself, Rick, Dane Levis, Dan Quinn, and Dave Caban. We started playing together last summer and recorded some pretty cool stuff. It was always just for fun but Rick and I decided we want to take it further and not only record some new stuff but also start playing some shows. You're probably wondering about the name...it was inspired by an episode of Seinfeld with George Costanza and also, atleast for me, really captures my general outlook on society as a whole. I guess at this point we could be classified as an Indie/Alternative/Rock/Rap group. We're still trying to find our genre...or maybe even creating our own. I play drums, Rick plays bass, Dane plays guitar, Dan also plays guitar, and Dave raps on the songs we rap on. Of course, we are students first and musicians second so really this is just a hobby but it's something we all love to do so give us a listen. The 3 songs at the top are live versions recorded last summer using one mic...so I apologize for the poor quality and the drums can be overbearing at times because of this. But hopefully you'll like our sound. "Ashes" and "Tragic Play" were performed by all 5 members and "Household Items" was performed by Rick, Dane and I. Feel free to give us feedback. Thanks!

My Video Picks:

This clip is from an episode of Tim and Eric Awesome Show I recently saw on Adult Swim. It's pretty much absurd and hilarious. Like the show.

Joe Pesci at his best in one of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite movies, Goodfellas. Rick still hasn't seen Goodfellas. Pshhhh and he has the nerve to call himself an Italian.

Hot Bitch of the Day:

Erin Andrews
Let's face it, it doesn't matter what game it is or who's playing. As soon as it's revealed that Erin Andrews is doing the sideline reporting, every guy's attention goes to her. The hottest babe in sports broadcasting. Erin Andrews, Hot Bitch of the Day!

Let the Madness Begin!

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

by Conor Levis

It's that time of year again, yes...it's time to start up the office pools and for gamblers everywhere to rejoice. It's time for the NCAA Tournament aka March Madness! This is my favorite time of the year because not only do we have the most exciting event in all of sports (the tournament), but also the beginning of baseball season, the home stretch and final push of the NBA and NHL seasons, and I get to blow hundreds of dollars on pools and match ups to wager on. What could be better!? Anyway, I'll keep this short and give you my picks and also some very sexy lines for my fellow gamblers to take. But first here are some videos to get you back into that March Madness spirit:

And of course the greatest sports commentator ever....

And now here are my picks......

Click here to see my entire bracket pick by pick on ESPN

This is what I have for first round upsets:

(13) Miss St. over (4) Washington
(11) Utah State over (6) Marquette
(10) Maryland over (7) California
(10) Minnesota over (7) Texas
(12) Western Kentucky over (5) Illinois
(11) Temple over (6) Arizona State
(10) Michigan over (7) Clemson

I'm a little mad because I know theres going to be a random 13 or 14 seed that pulls an upset this year, I just don't know which one.

Now for my Final Four picks: Louisville, Memphis, Pittsburgh, Syracuse

Louisville over Pittsburgh in the championship. It's the year of the Big East, I wouldn't be surprised at all if UConn made it 4 Big East teams make it to the Final Four.

..........Now I'm going to give you some money lines for tomorrow's games that I would recommend wagering on.

Conor's Recommended Lines:

(3) Kansas -10 over (14) North Dakota State....this is a team that just became a D1 school a year ago and Kansas is only giving 10? Really? I will gladly take the defending champs to win by 10.

(3) Syracuse -12 over (14) S F Austin...I've never even heard of this school. Syracuse has been hot and I see this one getting way out of hand early.

(4) Xavier -10.5 over (13) Portland State....Xavier is very underrated once again this year. I see them winning this by double figures with ease.

And my favorite....

(4) Wake Forrest -8 over (13) Cleveland State... Wake Forrest is a legitimate Final Four contender and not to knock Cleveland State because I wanted to pick them against any other team but even if this game ends up close, I still see Wake covering with some late free throws. It won't be close though. Take Wake by 8 points! Please, I'm begging you.

And one more thing to look into is the odds for regional winners. I'm really liking Villanova in the East region at +500. Very appealing. Enjoy the first day of March Madness and good luck on your brackets!

Rick's Picks
by Rick Welsch

Its tourney time again and here are some of my picks for 1st round upsets. Watching tonight's Celtics game and seeing that Mike Gorman had alot of the same upsets picked I feel better about them. Here they are, the 1st round upsets.

Arizona over Utah
USC over BC
Maryland over California
VCU over UCLA
Western Kentucky over Illinois
Michigan over Clemson

i also think Sienna, Texas A&M, and Tennessee will win but since they are just 8-9 games i dont really consider them an upset.

also here are my final 4

Louisville, Uconn, Duke and Syracuse with Duke and Louisville playing for the championship and Duke winning.

some notable teams i have going far are Marquette and FSU in the elite 8 and Maryland making it to the sweet 16.

Hot Bitch of the Day
Natalie Gulbis

What happens when you Google Image search Hot Golfer? You get Natalie Gulbis as a related search. It was only today that I was told by a good friend that golf has the hottest participants of all women sports. I still believe that tennis players are hotter, but either way this and many other golfers are hot. So Natalie, I dont know if your good at golf, but I dont care, you are today's Hot Bitch

Support Good, Local Music

by Conor Levis

I just want to take this time and give a plug to my best friend, who has been working hard on his music. His name is Cabes
and at this point I'm not really sure what you would call him...something like an Indie Rapper. Either way he makes great music, produces all of his own beats and writes some of the best lyrics I've ever heard and I really mean that. The problem like with most artists is being heard...so I'm hoping you'll give him a listen. If you like the song that's playing at the top (My favorite beat of his) check out some of his other stuff on his Myspace page. If you like his music, just get in touch with me and I'll get you an album. To date Cabes has released 3 EPs/LPs and is currently working on a 4th project. Please support local music. Have your own ideas and opinions, be original and don't just follow the bullshit you hear on the radio because everyone else likes it, ya dig?

Give Pedro a Freakin' Job
by Conor Levis

After watching our old friend, Pedro Martinez, pitch his heart out for 3 innings of no hit ball in Tuesday night's World Baseball Classic matchup again the Netherlands, it's clear that Pedro's still got something left in the tank. Pedro absolutely deserves a spot on an MLB roster this season at the right price. He may be a shell of his former self but what he has lost physically, he has gained mentally. The guy still knows how to pitch as he proved Tuesday night...as long as he can stay healthy. The way I see it, he's a low risk, high reward pitcher for any team. He should have a job by season's end and I'm not just saying that because Pedro is my favorite player ever. You're telling me that Pedro isn't better than any number 4 or 5 starter out there right now? I'd write more but Steve Phillips already beat me to it on ESPN.com (which I'm pissed about cause I had wanted to write about this Tuesday night after the game). So you can read his article to see what he stole from me.

"He may not be this Pedro anymore, but he still knows how to pitch"

Hot Bitch of the Day:

Anna KournikovaIt's everybody's favorite tennis player! Anna was recently featured in a new "sexy" photo shoot for K-Swiss. Yeah, that's right..."sexy" because that's what the article said. And I saw the photos. It doesn't even matter that you're dating Enrique Iglesias, Anna Kournikova, you are good at something and that's being a hot bitch. Hot Bitch of the Day!

10 Great Albums You Probably Don't Have

10 Great Albums You Probably Don't Have
By Rick

As the title indicates these are just 10 great albums you probably don't have. Do I think they are the 10 best albums ever... no, do I love all of these albums and think other people would enjoy them too... yes. There is no order to this, just a list of 10 really great albums you should get. And no I'm not doing this list to look cool and indie, these are just 10 albums I honestly and truely think deserve a wider audience. Enjoy.

Marquee Moon by Television
This album is incredible. It's constantly overlooked when talking about the great albums of the 70's. Rolling Stone put it as #128 all time and still so many people don't have this. What a shame.

Marquee Moon

Music From Big Pink by The Band

Another one of the classics that a lot of people don't own. The Band is possibly one of the most underrated bands all time, and Big Pink shows that. Wonderful musicians, wonderful songs, and a wonderful album.

The Weight

Tears of Rage

You're A Woman, I'm A Machine by Death From Above 1979

Here come some newer albums. This is the only full length studio album Death From Above ever recorded. This album will make you want to drink, dance, fight and fuck all at the same time. Unfortunately these guys broke up a few years back and we never will get another album. :(
Romantic Rights (Live)
Going Steady
We Don't Sleep At Night

Rated R by Queens of the Stone Age

Josh Homme is a guitar god. The fact is plain and simple. He was part of Kyuss, which if you don't know anything about Kyuss get educated, and QOTSA is probably one of the best things going musically right now. This is the bands second album, so they perfected the sound that brought them into the forefront but still weren't a household name yet. They wouldn't even be seen on MTV until Songs for the Deaf. The album starts off with an exclamation point and doesn't let up the entire time. Truely a pleasurable album.
Feel Good Hit of the Summer
The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret

Vaya by At the Drive-In

What happens when you reassemble the pieces of Sparta and The Mars Volta... you get At the Drive-In, duh. At the Drive-In went on to create two alt. rock powerhouses, but often their greatness is overlooked. Omar shreds, Cedric belts it out, and the result is some groovy experimentaly stuff.

Ursa Minor
Rascuache

Entire Album Parts 1 2 3

Dandelion Gum by Black Moth Super Rainbow

I orginally heard about this album because I dug Tobacco's Fucked Up Friends album, and I am happy to have stumbled upon this little electronic piece of heaven. A fun album to listen to whilst walking across campus late at night fucked up.

Sun Lips

Strawberry Weed by The Caesars

Honestly if you look at this album as not being the best album ever you begin to think its a great album, if that makes any sense. It's fun, poppy, and gives me a 70's feel.

Strawberry Weed
Boo Boo Goo Goo
Fools Parade

Board Up the House by Genghis Tron

Genghis Tron is a metal band with no drummer. This sounds like madness. No it sounds like this...
Colony Collapse
Board Up the House
Things Don't Look Good

They program the drums and play along side that live. Programming drums, a hip hop trick, used for metal... wowzers! These guys really are an incredible band. I unfortunately passed up seeing them for free. I was in a bad place then and kick myself everyday for not going. Check out this record if you can handle a little metal...

A Long Hot Summer by Masta Ace

I just recently discovered Masta Ace after hearing Nostalgia on mtvU. He is a real good rapper, doing stuff that has thought behind it. A Long Hot Summer is a great concept album, and seeing as I didn't have this until last week I dont think many other people do either. Real hip hop done for the sake of hip hop.

Good Ol' Love
H.O.O.D.
Top Ten List

Insomnia Rhymes by Cabes

Speaking of real hip hop, Cabes really puts it down. Check him out at his myspace. I really love this album its one of my favorite of all time. Support local music. If you want this album get in touch with me or conor and we'll make sure you get hooked up with a copy or a download link.

Ashes

Hot Bitch of the Day
Jessica Biel
She's dating JT, who I think is probably a cool guy in real life, and the was just on the SNL this past weekend. Oh ya... shes also a stone cold fox. The ex-7th Heaven-er has gone on to become one of the hottest women in Hollywood, and believe you me I didn't mind seeing her change in I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. Too bad she won't take back her stance of no nudity on screen :(. Jessica Biel, welcome to the ranks of Hot Bitch Of the Day.

Watchmen is Good

Watchmen
by Rick

Honestly go see this it was really cool. It seemed really confusing at first, then it kinda explained itself throughout. I recommend it, and in IMAX too if you can. There is far to much blue penis in it, but that ok, because you see the chick naked, and thats all that really matters. Plus Rorschach is bad fucking ass. Go see it.

Hot Bitch of the Day
Malin Akerman
Milan is so fucking hot. She stars in Watchmen and you see her naked a few times... LIFE LIFE LIFE! Milan, your movie is gonna make shit tons of money this weekend, and your the Hot Bitch of the Day... does life get any better?

Broken Hearts and Burgers
by Conor Levis

What's going on with couples lately? My brother and one of my good friends recently ended long relationships right before Valentines Day. Not only that but many other couples I know have been having problems as of late. This will most likely be the sappiest, most sentimental thing I ever write on this blog and it was supposed to be for Valentine's Day but I never got around to finishing it. It is still very relevant to me so that's why you have to read it. I guess you're probably wondering about the title of this post...that's right, I'm eating a hamburger as I write this. I don't really care for burgers to be honest. They just don't appeal to me all that much. I never go out of my way to have one and I never crave one if I don't have it. The thing is...they're delicious and the minute I bite into one, all of those great feelings come back to me. I may not always be happy with a burger but at least I know how I really feel about it. Oh yeah, relationships...

I'm no Dr. Phil but I've played this game long enough to give my opinion. It sucks to have your heart broken, it really does. But with all the heartbreak that's been happening around me, I can only ask one thing...is it really worth it? The problem always seems to be people failing to differentiate real emotion from a fake one. I've seen relationships end that never should have from being hooked on a feeling and I've seen relationships go on far too long because of false feelings and the fear of being alone. You're going to feel great when things are going well and you're gonna feel awful when they aren't. That's just how the game works. The key is to find that one true, consistent emotion. I have a friend who just got out of a long relationship that consisted of cheating and constant fighting among other things. It got to the point where he didn't even like her anymore. Actually he legitimately hated her, yet he stayed with her. I used to tell him over and over that one day he would look back and regret it because he was holding on to something that wasn't there anymore. Needless to say, that day finally came and all I could say was I told you so.

I also know of another relationship that just ended because of how somebody felt in a certain moment and not how they truly feel about the person. After working through the initial kinks of being a new couple, things had been really good with these two for a while until they butted heads again and she ultimately wanted a break. The sad part is that he is falling for this girl and really cares about her and I know deep down that she does too. But I guess that's the funny thing about relationships. One day you think you might be in love with someone, the next day they're gone. But the memories and the lessons learned stay with you forever. So if this hits home with any of you, don't dwell on the past. There's always someone better out there for everyone. Sometimes everything you could ever want is right in front of you and you just never realized : ) And then sometimes things are worth fighting for. It's up to you to figure out how you truly feel. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna continue to indulge in my one true love....FOOD!

My Video Picks:

I found the latest "I Am Not" Dancing with the Stars commercial unintentionally hilarious. It reminds of something they would do before a big game in sports to get the juices flowing. What was the point of this? To get us fired up to watch a bunch of celebrities attempt to dance? I particularly like the Denise Richards "I am not Drew Lachey" at the end. I wonder if she even knows who he is.

I found this incredible video of Audioslave frontman, Chris Cornell, formerly of Soundgarden, performing an acoustic version of his monster hit "Black Hole Sun" at an Audioslave concert a few years back. I love the reaction of the crowd when they realized what he was playing. It gives me chills and not just because the original is one of my 5 favorite songs of all-time.

Hot Bitch of the Day:

No Hot Bitch of the Day, go look elsewhere you pervs.
